Economics of 3D Modeling: How to Value Your Work and Accept Reality
Every author creating digital content for 3D printing sooner or later faces the question: «How much is my model worth, and how do I recoup the resources I put in?»
Below is a basic formula for valuing your work, a sober look at pricing, and the industry's main rule — which you either accept, or close Blender/ZBrush right now and find something else to do.

- Calculate the base: You conceived the model, spent time, printed it yourself, fixed the issues, and cut it perfectly. Decide in advance what all those resources are worth in total.
- Set a timeframe: Set a deadline by which you plan to fully get back the money invested (for example, within the first month of sales). Everything after that is pure upside.
- Take off the rose-colored glasses: One model will not feed you forever. People will buy it, but sooner or later it will be leaked or forwarded. That's inevitable. Accept it.
Part 1. Cost formula: What the price is made of
When you've conceived and created a model, its value doesn't come from thin air. It consists of three concrete factors:
$$Cost = (N \times X) + \text{Amortization} + \text{Testing}$$
- $N$ (Time spent): The number of hours you spent sculpting, modeling, retopologizing, and texturing. Time is the only non-renewable resource.
- $X$ (Your skill / Rate): An objective assessment of your skill. A beginner cannot price their hour the same as a top industry professional. The higher $X$, the more expensive an hour of your time.
- Testing and finishing: You didn't just hand over a raw file. You printed the model (SLA/FDM), found weak spots, fixed every mistake, cut it into parts perfectly, hid the seams, and prepared it for hassle-free «out of the box» printing. That is also work that costs resources (resin, filament, power, films).
⚠️ You must decide in advance what your resources are worth, and clearly lock that number in your head before the model goes to release.
Part 2. Payback period: The model as an investment
You create a model hoping it will pay back all the resources invested. To do that, you match your costs (time, effort, skill) against the period of time in which you plan to recover or earn that money.
Example: If creating and testing a perfect miniature cost you roughly $300 (by your internal estimate of time and skill), your job is to get those $300 back within a set period (for example, the first month of sales via subscriptions or individual sales). Everything that comes in after that point is your net profit.
Part 3. The industry's main axiom (Harsh reality)
And now the main rule that shatters the illusions of many beginning authors:
Nobody can ever get paid forever for one single model — even the most perfect and brilliant one.
People will buy it from you. For a long time, actively, steadily. But you must accept one hard fact: one way or another, sooner or later, all digital models end up in public access (leaks, forwards, group buys). Just accept it.
The internet works like this: if a file can be downloaded, it can be shared. Protecting a digital model 100% is physically impossible.

If the thought of someone forwarding your model to a friend or posting it in a public channel makes you shake, if you're not ready to bake that risk into your business model and constantly generate new, quality content that people will want to buy for the service, convenience, and supporting the author — then just don't do modeling, fuck it.
