Why Commercial Licenses from Patreon Often Mean Nothing

Many 3D printers buy expensive subscriptions (Commercial Tier) from sculptors on Patreon or Boosty. The logic goes: “I paid the author for a commercial license, so now I can legally sell these figures.”

In reality, it does not work that way.

A sculptor can sell you a license only for what they invented themselves. If they sculpted a unique orc from their own imagination — the license works. You honestly bought the right to sell plastic copies.

But if the sculptor sculpted Batman or an anime character, their commercial license is just empty air. They have no rights to Batman, which means they cannot authorize you to make money from him. By buying such a “license,” you are simply giving money to the model’s author, but for rights holders (say, Warner Bros) you are still an infringer.

If a complaint comes your way or you get banned on a marketplace, that piece of paper or Patreon screenshot will not save you. You will have to deal with the problems yourself.
