Mr. Super Clear UV Cut Matt (B-523): Working with Acrylic
Mr. Super Clear UV Cut Matt (B-523) is an aerosol matte top coat from Mr.Hobby (GSI Creos) on a lacquer (nitro) base with a UV filter added. The filter prevents the varnish from yellowing and paints from fading under ultraviolet light, which is especially relevant for dioramas and figures on open shelves.
⚠️ Warning: This is the riskiest option in the Mr.Hobby lineup for sealing acrylic paints.
Why is this dangerous for acrylic?
The Super Clear line uses extremely aggressive organic solvents. When applied over water-based acrylic paints, the solvent in the aerosol can react with the paint.
Possible consequences:
“Boiling” or cracking of the paint layer (crazing / craquelure effect).
Dissolving complex blending (especially critical for glazes and fine light-and-shadow transitions).
Clouding (a whitish haze) if you apply the varnish in too thick a coat or in high humidity.
Usage recommendations
It is not recommended to use Mr. Super Clear as your primary finish varnish if the figure is painted with pure acrylic without intermediate protective layers. The risk of ruining hours of work is too high.
If you still decide to use it:
Intermediate layer (Barrier coat): Always cover the acrylic with a coat of gloss acrylic or polyurethane varnish before applying the lacquer.
“Dry mist” technique (Mist coats): Apply Mr. Super Clear in short, quick bursts from 20–30 cm away. The first coat should be barely visible dust. Let it dry for 10–15 minutes. This thin crust will protect the acrylic from subsequent, “wetter” varnish layers.
💡 Acrylic alternative:
If you want a matte varnish from Mr.Hobby that is 100% safe for acrylic, use Mr. Top Coat Flat (B-503) or Mr. Premium Top Coat Flat (B-514). They are water-based and do not damage the acrylic layer under any circumstances.
